Seth MacFarlane Hosts 2012 Oscars

Family Guy Creator Seth MacFarlane will host the 85th Oscars awards ceremony, taking over from last year’s hosting veteran Billy Crystal.  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the official announcement today explaining that

”[MacFarlane's] performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh.”

MacFarlane’s vocal talents are very familiar to fans of his various cartoon series (Family Guy, American Dad. The Cleveland Show) and he recently made a successful big screen debut as a foul mouthed cuddly toy in Ted. He also recently released a musical album of big band tunes which may have also helped impressed the Academy. Comedic musical numbers have long been a firm staple of the Oscar ceremony repertoire

It remains to be seen how tolerant the Academy will be of some of MacFarlane’s trademark lowbrow material.  Although perhaps his recent appearances on SNL and at the Emmy Awards have helped convince them that he can slip on a tuxedo and avoid making any flatulence related jokes for at least a few hours.
